Log roll edging is both a functional and aesthetic way to neatly edge lawns and flower borders.

This decorative edging is extremely versatile being able to form either delicate curves or straight lines. The small gaps between each log allow both water and air to pass through the edging.

This helps to keep soil aerated and well drained behind the timber. Log roll edging comes in a variety of different heights and sizes.

​How to install log roll garden edging step by step

​Step 1: Marking out

​Firstly, mark out where you want your log roll edging to be situated. This can be marked out using a string line or line marker spray. At this point think about what height of edging you will need. If the edging is retaining soil with flower borders will be best to set it a little deeper in the ground.  This means you will need a taller edging with more height. 

​Step2: Excavation

​Excavate a shallow and narrow trench where you want to install your border edging. Typically a narrow trench between 50mm – 100mm deep is adequate. Place the excavated soil to one side as you will back fill around the edgings when you are finished. 

​Step 3: Laying edging

​Now place your log roll edging into your excavation and work it into position. If you are laying spiked edging tap it in to the shape and orientation you want. Try to keep the edging as vertical as possible when tapping. For standard logroll use some soil to anchor it into position if need be. 

​Step 4: Checking levels

​Log roll edging can be laid to any shape or curve it is best to keep tops level and consistent. Consequently you may want to check your levels as you lay out the edging. The best way to do this is by running a tight string line across the top of your edging. You can also check levels as you lay with a straight edge or spirit level. 

​Step 5: Fixing the log roll

​If you are laying standard log roll edging you will need to fix it down securely. The best method is fixing to 50mm x 50mm treated timber pegs tapped securely into the ground. These can be tapped down lower than the top of the edging on the border side. This way they can remain hidden from view! The log roll can then be screwed directly onto the timber edging with external grade screws. 

​Step 6: Back fill and soil levelling 

​When your log roll is tapped securely into position, back fill around its base with the excess soil.

​The best way to fix log roll edging is to timber pegs tapped into the soil behind. The edging can then be screwed to the pegs using 75mm external grade screws. 

​How to install log roll edging on a slope?

​You can lay your edging too the gradient of the slope if it’s relatively consistent. However the best way to install to a slope is by stepping it up or down.

This involves laying small sections level and stepping up a slope gradually. Each level section will however need to be aide between vertical pegs or posts to accommodate the steps.

​This stepping can often be seen when installing fence panels on a slope.

​How to install log roll edging on concrete? 

​​If you want to install log roll edging to concrete are a few ways of doing this. Fundamentally its best to bolt timber beading to the concrete first, then edging can be screwed to it.

This can be achieved by using masonry screws with sleeved plugs. These can fix timber beading very securely to concrete surfaces.

If your concrete is vertical and flat you could fix it with an external grab adhesive. However this is not always the most robust solution!

For concrete paths and patios cutting and braking small post holes is an option. 50mm x 50mm treaded timber can then be concreted in like small posts. The timber edging can then be fixed to the timber posts.
